Special Announcement from the Board of Management of Taralye

(Advisory Council for Children with Impaired Hearing Ltd)

From early in 2016, the Board of Taralye has been evaluating possible futures for the organization. These discussions have been complex and difficult as we try to come to terms with the changing environment in our sector as the National Disability Insurance Scheme is rolled out across Australia. Our discussions have been guided by one principle only – to provide the best possible future for hearing impaired children in Victoria – the original guiding principle of Taralye at its inception almost 50 years ago.

Our discussions led us to the view that our guiding principle would be best served if Taralye could be part of a larger organization, one with national presence and with the resources to develop our service in Victoria to be truly state-wide. We have for some time aspired to develop new centres to improve access to service for Victorian families, but progress has been slower than we would like due to our limited resources. The Board spent many hours investigating possible mergers with other suitable organizations and after careful consideration has entered negotiations with the Royal Institute for Deaf and Blind Children (RIDBC). These discussions are intended to lead to Taralye becoming part of the RIDBC network. At this stage, no binding contracts have been entered into but we expect that if everything proceeds smoothly, a decision on this merger will be made within the next two months.

There will, no doubt, be many questions from staff, our current families, donors and other collaborating organizations and we will try to answer any questions you may have. Given that negotiations are ongoing and some issues remain confidential or uncertain, not all questions will be answerable. Please be assured however, that the Board is optimistic about the potential of such a merger to improve the quality and equity of services provided by Taralye in Victoria for the families of hearing-impaired children.
